The name "Australian Shepherd" is somewhat of a misnomer since these dogs were bred in Western United States. Often called "Aussie", Australian Shepherds were originally developed to herd livestock and protect their farms. They gained recognition by frequently showcasing their intelligence in rodeos and exhibitions. Aussies have a soft, waterproof coat that covers their lean, athletic build. Their coat comes in a variety of colors ranging from red merle to black merle with the occasional tricolor. Recently, Aussies have been gaining popularity because of their gorgeous multi-colored eyes. As household pets, Aussies are known to be even-tempered dogs that are friendly towards their family members while retaining their watchdog instinct.
