The Bull Terrier can be described as the black sheep of the Terrier family. Unlike most terriers, these tough and resilient dogs were initially bred as fighting dogs. Breeders wanted to combine the perseverance of Terriers with the strength of the strength of the Old English Bulldog (now extinct). They became excellent fighting dogs giving them the nickname "Gladiator of the Terriers". In 1835, after the outlawing of bull-baiting, Bull Terriers found new tasks like hunting small game and being companion dogs. Today, Bull Terriers are usually seen in coats of white but can also appear in coats of black, light brown and red. They have a unique oval-shaped head and a burly, stocky body. The Bull Terrier's friendly nature has made it a favorite as a household pet and prospective owners can expect it to act as a terrific guard dog when they are not home.
