A native of England, the Bulldog has to be one of the more distinct looking dog breeds. This dog was originally bred to take part in the now illegal bull-baiting. Bulldogs had a muscular frame and strong jaws that they would use to latch onto the necks of a bull forcing them to fall on the ground. After the ban of bull-baiting, Bulldogs became nearly extinct in England but continued to work as cattle herders in the United States. Breeders started mixing Bulldogs to create new breeds like the Boxer, Staffordshire Terrier, Boston Terrier and many more. They also started selectively breeding shorter Bulldogs with more skin rolls to create the modern Bulldog people love today. Bulldogs are always in the top five iwhen it comes to popularity and are frequently used as mascots. From a household point of view, Bulldogs are known to make excellent family dogs. They are extremely loyal and seldom show aggression to other dogs or humans. Before purchasing this dog, however, prospective should be aware of the abundance of health problems that come with owning a Bulldog.
