The Staffordshire Bull Terrier, a cross of the Old English Bulldog (now extinct) and English White Terrier (now extinct), was bred in the region of England with the purpose of taking part in the infamous sport of bull-baiting. They grew popular in the bull-baiting community because of their fighting spirit to defend their owner until the very end. They also had an appealing look. Staffordshire Bull Terriers (Staffies for short) had a face that makes it seem that they are always smiling and came in almost every variation of colors. After the outlawing of dog fighting in 1835, Staffies started to loose popularity and saw their numbers dwindle drastically. Fearing extinction, breeders started selectively breeding Staffordshire Bull Terriers to become family dogs. They were successful and today Staffies are also known as "Nanny Dogs" because of their patience and gentle nature with kids. Staffies are amazing family dogs and their large numbers in animal shelters make them financially available for almost anyone to adopt.
